One Consultant’s Journey to the Center of NetSuite Implementations is Part 1 in our Career Series to get know the Myers-Holum, Inc. (MHI) Team and discover what makes the MHI Team so productive, more engaged and more fulfilled than other consultants. We sat down with Marc Bastnagel, MHI Delivery Practice Manager to find out his take on consulting, MHI and leadership. 

What brought you to a career in consulting?

Marc Bastnagel – I started out as a CPA, dealing with the same processes every month and year. What I saw in consulting and technology solutions was an opportunity to grow my career. This is challenging work that is rewarding and satisfying. I started out doing NetSuite projects and then managed a project team. Recently, I was promoted to Practice Manager.

What were you looking for when you decided on MHI?

Marc – What I was looking for when I came to Myers-Holum was career growth, an atmosphere where only top talent survives, and everybody pulls their own weight. Marc What I love most about Myers-Holum is that I have finally found a firm that grows as fast as I do.

What makes a great consultant?

Marc – A great consultant requires personality, passion and functional or technical knowledge.

Describe your leadership style.

Marc – I have a team approach. I truly care about my people and the clients’ success. I try to mold my leadership style to what I like. So, I avoid micromanaging, but I am as available as people need me to be. I trust and coach my team and want to ensure they are the best they can be.

What has been pivotal to who you are today?

Marc – My parents did a lot for us. My dad started a construction business and my mom became a nurse to give us more chances in life. Also, I grew up on a ranch so sitting around was not an option. Because of them and where I grew up, I have always had this drive to see where I can take an opportunity.

Tell us about your life outside work.

Marc – I have a few toys outside of work. I enjoy some extreme snowmobiling as well as building and racing off-road vehicles. It is easy to get burned out knowing that there are so many career rewards for hard work. You have to have a way to turn work off sometimes – find ways to unwind. I also spend time traveling. I visit friends all over and family in Wyoming and California.

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self?

Marc – No matter what job you have, if you care about what you do, you will have good days and bad days, the key is to find something that you are passionate about and enjoy doing.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

Marc Bastnagel – Do not stress about what you cannot control. Put your energy into using the tools at hand to find a resolution. And then, go get a drink with a friend.
